Popular couples' costumes back in the day were the Cowboy and Indian combination outfits. The man would turn up to the party wearing cowboy fancy dress and the woman would come as an Indian squaw. However, in recent years I have been to more and more Halloween parties where the opposite has been true. The man has actually come to the party as an Indian chief, while his female partner has turned up wearing a very skimpy cowgirl fancy dress outfit.
How can that be? When I used to watch the Westerns as a boy, Hollywood nearly always portrayed the female characters as wholesome ladies, cooking the meals and doing the housework, while their cowboys toiled all day out on the plains, skilfully rounding up cattle. So cowgirl fancy dress can't be very realistic then, can it? Well, yes and no.
The truth is that there were certainly many cowgirls back in the days of the Wild West, who could rope and ride as well as the men could and who were readily accepted amongst the cowboys, once they had earned their spurs. However, it is very unlikely that the West would have been won at all if the cowgirls' outfits had
been anything like the cowgirl fancy dress costumes you see today at parties.
Ironically, the outfits worn by the cowgirls in those days far more resemble the typical cowboy fancy dress costumes rather than those meant for the ladies. That said, if you are up for wearing something a little bit daring to the next party, then these cowgirl costumes are guaranteed to turn heads when you mosey on in to the room.
If you do not feel comfortable wearing one of these cowgirl outfits, but like the idea of a Wild West theme, then you might want to consider going as a sultry saloon madam. Just as enticing, but perhaps a little less revealing.
